James Madison (1751-June 28, 1836) Democrat-Republican (Today's Democrat Party) Presidency: 1809-1817 Vice Presidents: George Clinton(1809-1812) ·Elbridge Gerry(1813-1817) Grade: A-
James Madison was the 4th president of the United States. I believe that he deserves a B+ because although he had many accomplishments as president like the victories in the inherited War of 1812 and the Treaty of Ghent. He also had hardships in his Presidency like the British raid of Washington and the Capital.
I gave President James Madison An A- because in his first year trading with Britain and France was prohibited. The decision was made that they should open trade and President Madison opened trade with France’s dictator Napoleon and prohibited trade with Britain. Because of English ships taking over and impressing American seamen to sail with them and stealing the cargo on board, on June 1, 1812 James Madison asked congress to declare war with Britain.
America was not militarily prepared for this war and nearly 6,000 men died or were injured. But there were some very necessary victories like the naval victory that stopped the British from going through New York. But the most important of these victories was the victory of New Orleans. The American army led by General Andrew Jackson led the army to victory in the war that the Star Bangled Banner was written for.
The victory brought a great sense of nationalism which brought about the completion of James Madison’s biggest goal "The advice nearest to my heart and deepest in my convictions is that the Union of the States be cherished and perpetuated." The States were brought together in the Nationalism felt through out America. And so the American Identity changed from unwilling unity to complete unity.
